The community of Discalced Carmelites from Dendermonde moved to Moerzeke in 1976. There are only 11 monasteries of Discalced Carmelites or Theresians in Flanders. They live, following the example of Saint Teresa of Avila, in total solitude to fully dedicate themselves to prayer. They aim to be protected strongholds from which God's Love can spread. The sisters never leave the convent walls, except in cases of serious illness or when voting is required. Grills separate them from the public parts of the monastery, which greatly limits contact with the outside world.
