Over the centuries, this has been the site of a series of different chateaux, the second homes of the governors- general of the Netherlands since Mary of Habsburg, sister of Charles V, who gave the estate its name. The present modern building replaced the residence of the Warocqué family, destroyed by fire in 1960, and houses the Musée Royal de Mariemont, containing a superb collection of works of art amassed by this manufacturing family. The park contains one of Wallonia’s major collections of trees (including rarities such as a pecan tree and an Amur corktree with a circumference of 4.28 m), a huge winter garden and a beautiful rose garden.
