During the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), Damme was developed by the Spanish occupiers into a garrison town with a star-shaped wall. Once the military importance of Damme faded, various biotopes developed in the canals. You can find a swamp forest, reed beds, and unique marsh plants such as Bladderwort and Marsh Fern, as well as typical reed birds like the Water Rail, Little Reed Warbler, and Crested Grebe. In winter, thousands of "frost geese," mainly Barnacle Geese and Lesser White-fronted Geese, can be found here. Come and enjoy this beautiful piece of nature! From the observation hut, you have a great view of all the birds.
This part of the reserve can only be visited with a nature guide.
