Here in Schiplaken and the eponymous forest, the gruesome battle of Schiplaken was fought during World War I. This battle is vividly described in the book by Stefan Hertmans, War and Turpentine: "In the village, we saw the hissing ruins of houses in the rain, the animals and people killed by mortar fire, the burned-out church that had only been consecrated seven years earlier by Cardinal Mercier. That was everything we noticed of the gruesome battle of Schiplaken, which would make it into all the textbooks."
