The Bailiwick Farm, like a large number of old buildings in Flanders, has curious masonry marks. A masonry sign or mason's sign is a decorative figure applied in masonry by means of selective use of differently colored bricks. Masonry marks appeared in northwestern Europe from the thirteenth century onwards. From the eighteenth century, its use declined. The oldest known examples of masonry marks occur in Poland and eastern Germany. Of later origin they are found all over western Europe. There are numerous hypotheses about the ear song and the meaning of masonry marks. It ranges from simple creative expressions to incantatory or protective functions. Common are signs to incantation of "evil spirits" such as the Calvary cross. Often these signs, with origin in popular belief, were applied at a higher height. Gradually, the visibility of the signs became more important and they are also applied at a lower height, which indicates that they wanted to convey a message.
