Built in 1627 as a Spanish military stronghold after the end of the Twelve-Year Truce between the Catholic Spaniards and the Protestant Dutch. As the northernmost fort of the Fontaine Line, the Saint Paul's Fort serves as the first defense against incursions through the salt marshes around the Zwingeul. After the Treaty of Münster, the fortress was evacuated in 1650. In later border disputes and disputes, it was reused and restored several more times. What remains is the earthen main rampart and moat. Protected as a monument since 2004.
