Presumably, on the site of the current Saint Aldegondis Church, there stood an 8th-century wooden church. From 1973 to 1974, excavations were carried out prior to the restoration, which revealed that the Saint Aldegondis Church had a Romanesque predecessor. The church of As was first mentioned in a chronicle dated December 13, 1108, in which Otbert, prince-bishop of Liège, reported to the Rolduc Abbey about income from the churches of Riemst, Genk, As, and Gellik.
