The buildings of the Saint Joseph Institute have a long
prehistory. From 1820 the beguinage grew into a
education center. The beguines founded a household school there
for poor girls. In 1835 the lay teachers Maria Theresia and Jeannette Van Heteren came to settle on the beguinage. The school was transformed into a municipal primary school for girls in 1850. The lessons were given in two beguine houses on the west side of the beguinage. Maria Theresia Van Heteren was headmaster there. In 1848 the Normal School was started. Almost all beguine houses along the Burchtstraat were used for this. Gradually, the number of students grew. A new school building was inaugurated in 1904. Due to an expansion in 1914, the school was given its current size.
