From the spring of 1916, the heath between As and Maasmechelen was used by the German 4th Army as a training ground for its Minenwerferschule. From 1917 the German soldiers were billeted in the Heilig-Hartcollege in Maasmechelen and in Opgrimbie with the sisters, among others. At the beginning of 1918, soldiers were also quartered at Boorsem. The presence of the German troops obviously had an impact on the community.
From the shelter in the parking lot you can follow the yellow walk to see the relics of this Minenwerfer Schule. More information can be found on the information board in the shelter. If you want, you can book a Ranger, which can show you the non-publicly accessible parts. www.rlkm.be
