The Site of Great Biological Interest of the Viviers, better known as the Terril des Viviers, is an old coal mining site located to the east of Gilly, a section of the city of Charleroi.
This site features a small conical spoil tip as well as vast open areas mainly consisting of pioneer grasslands and wastelands. It also includes a water body and temporary ponds, along with some wooded areas on the west and north borders. These particular biotopes have great biological interest and serve as a refuge for diverse wildlife. The extensive reed bed surrounding the pond hosts the great reed warbler, a bird specific to this type of vegetation. Several species of amphibians can be observed here, including a population of calamity toads, as well as some insects, such as the blue-winged grasshopper.
