The port, founded in 1971, covers an area of 460 hectares and stretches 30 km along the Sambre and the Canal Charleroi-Brussels. Through this canal, the port is connected to the Flemish waterways network.
The port's waterborne cargo handling reached 1 million tons in 1974 but then steadily declined until 1992. In 1992, about 0.45 million tons were handled by water. From 1992 to 2001, the handling increased to about 2.5 million tons. Since then, the handling has stabilized.
