'Lone Tree Cemetery' is named after the nearby exploded 'Lone Tree Crater' (also known as 'Spanbroekmolen Crater' or 'Pool of Peace'), one of the 19 craters that formed on June 7, 1917, during the famous Battle of Messines. However, the mine at Spanbroekmolen is said to have exploded a few seconds later, causing the men of the 'Royal Irish Rifles' ('36th Ulster Division'), who left the trenches too early at the designated time of 03:10 in the morning, to be hit by their own mine. Almost all graves contain the dead from that June 7, with 60 of the 88 dead belonging to the 'Royal Irish Rifles' ('36th Division').
