The village of Rutten is known for the annual Saint Evermarus festivities. Evermarus was a pilgrim who was murdered along with his companions by the raider Hacco and his gang in the forests around Rutten during his return from Compostela. Evermarus was considered a martyr and was canonized. In 968, the grave of Evermarus was found, and subsequently, a chapel was built on it. The annual commemoration on May 1 consists of a pilgrim's mass, a procession with horses, and the martyr play. Only true Rutten residents participate in this play, which depicts the robbery and murder. In 2017, the mystery play was recognized as intangible cultural heritage. It is the oldest still actively performed mystery play in Belgium.
