The beautiful belle époque interior with art nouveau accents (1886) is certainly worth a drink break. When it's time for an aperitif, order like Jacques Brel the house specialty 'half-and-half': half a glass of white wine, topped up with half a glass of sparkling wine. According to legend, this drink was created when stockbrokers could no longer afford real champagne after a losing day but still wanted to maintain the appearance of success. As long as it sparkles…
Along the terrace of Le Cirio, the construction site for the renovation of the Stock Exchange building (1868) is slowly coming to an end. This monumental symbol of the economic and industrial boom of young Belgium was built on the ruins of a former Franciscan monastery (1238). A few peepholes in Beursstraat already spark curiosity; the entrance to the archaeological site (opening expected late 2023) is in the Stock Exchange building.
