The station Antwerpen-Dokken and -Stapelplaatsen, abbreviated to Antwerpen-Dokken or Antwerpen-D.S. in Antwerp, was called station Antwerpen between 1840 and 1854. Although the station was originally intended to be a passenger station, it was ultimately inaugurated on August 25, 1840, as the commercial station of Antwerp. The first location of the station was at the Oude Leeuwenrui, near Brouwersvliet and the port facilities. Branch lines served the Royal Entrepot and the dock areas. Through the Rijnpoort, the station was connected to the then Borgerhout station and thus to railway line 25. With the completion of the Rhine railway on October 13, 1843, the station was at the beginning of the Iron Rhine, an important international freight corridor between the port of Antwerp and the Ruhr area, which increased the international significance of the port and underpinned the important German community in 19th-century Antwerp.
