Without a doubt, De Burg, charmingly situated in the valley of the Mangelbeek, is the oldest castle in Lummen. In 1203, it was handed over by Louis II, sovereign Count of Loon, to Hughes de Pierpont, Prince-Bishop of Liège. From 1350 to 1837 it was in the possession of the van der Marck family. This family supplied some prince-bishops to Liège. Some of the most illustrious descendants were without a doubt Willem I van der Marck, nicknamed the "Wild Boar of the Ardennes" and his great-grandson Willem II van der Marck, nicknamed Lumey. In 1566 he joined the resistance against the Spanish king Philip II. Lumey became one of the most notorious Sea Beggars and in 1572, as admiral of the Beggars' fleet for Prince William of Orange, conquered the Dutch city of Den Briel. This victory marked the beginning of the independence of the Netherlands.
The castle in its current form, neoclassical style, dates from the end of the 19th century.
