Originally, Ter Motten was a Loons leen, located next to the heerbaan. On the site of the current castle there may have been a motte or older castle. The oldest known lord was Willem van Rommershoven who was mentioned in 1375. This was followed by the Van Horpmaal, Van Papenhoven, De Waimes, De Coursel and, since 1643, De Rosen families. In 1784, by marriage, it came into the possession of the De Saeren family. After 1863, successively the Van Aefferden and Moreau de Bellaing families came into possession of the castle. In 1973 the castle, together with the park, was sold by the latter family to the municipality. Today it is the town hall of Dilsen-Stokkem. In 1985 it was protected as a monument.
