Originariamente Ter Motten era un feudo di Loon, situato accanto alla strada principale. Sul sito dell'attuale castello potrebbe essersi trovata una motta o un castello più antico. Il signore più antico conosciuto era Willem van Rommershoven, menzionato nel 1375. Successivamente seguirono le famiglie Van Horpmaal, Van Papenhoven, De Waimes, De Coursel e, dal 1643, De Rosen. Nel 1784, attraverso un matrimonio, passò in possesso della famiglia De Saeren. Dopo il 1863 le famiglie Van Aefferden e Moreau de Bellaing seguirono nel possesso del castello. Nel 1973 il castello, insieme al parco, fu venduto all'amministrazione comunale dall'ultima famiglia citata. Oggi è il municipio di Dilsen-Stokkem. Nel 1985 è stato protetto come monumento.
