Ursprünglich war Ter Motten ein Lehen von Loon, gelegen neben der Heerbaan. An der Stelle des heutigen Schlosses könnte sich möglicherweise eine Motte oder eine ältere Burg befunden haben. Der älteste bekannte Herr war Willem van Rommershoven, der 1375 erwähnt wurde. Danach folgten die Familien Van Horpmaal, Van Papenhoven, De Waimes, De Coursel und seit 1643 De Rosen. 1784 gelangte es durch Heiratsvertrag in den Besitz der Familie De Saeren. Nach 1863 kamen nacheinander die Familien Van Aefferden und Moreau de Bellaing in den Besitz des Schlosses. 1973 wurde das Schloss zusammen mit dem Park von letzterer Familie an die Gemeinde verkauft. Heute ist es das Rathaus von Dilsen-Stokkem. 1985 wurde es als Denkmal geschützt.
