Oprindeligt var Ter Motten et lån fra Loon, beliggende ved herregården. På stedet for det nuværende slot har der muligvis været en motte eller et ældre slot. Den ældste kendte herre var Willem van Rommershoven, der blev nævnt i 1375. Derefter fulgte familierne Van Horpmaal, Van Papenhoven, De Waimes, De Coursel og, siden 1643, De Rosen. I 1784 kom det, gennem ægteskab, i besiddelse af familien De Saeren. Efter 1863 kom henholdsvis familierne Van Aefferden og Moreau de Bellaing i besiddelse af slottet. I 1973 blev slottet, sammen med parken, solgt af den sidstnævnte familie til kommunen. I dag er det rådhuset i Dilsen-Stokkem. I 1985 blev det beskyttet som monument.
