Eisden Coal Mine

The Eisden Coal Mine in Belgium, located in the Maasland region of Limburg, was one of the seven mines of the Kempen Basin. This mining site was located in Eisden, a sub-municipality of the Belgian municipality of Maasmechelen since 1971.

Just before the First World War, the Eisden coal mine of the Société Anonyme des Charbonnages Limbourg-Meuse, founded in 1907, appeared on the 'common grounds' of the village of Eisden, with 300 inhabitants, on the other side of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, in the heath, dune and forest area, which began to produce coal. The Sainte-Barbe concession – 2170 hectares – was granted on 29 November 1906 and was merged on 20 May 1919 with the Guillaume Lambert concession of 2740 hectares, later extended to 5408 hectares. The Eisden coal mine belonged to influential groups, including the Brufina holding company of manager Paul Auguste Cyrille de Launoit and the Evence Coppée group, which also operated mines in Wallonia and northern France.
