In the landscape along the Ketelstraat the malt factory of Cargill Belgium (Herent).
Since the end of the 19th century, the production of malt was started by "Les Malteries Leon Dreyfus" in Leuven. The production facility moved to Herent in 1967 and Cargill became owner in 1984. The capacity of the past 30 years has increased from 10,000 tons to 115,000 MT. The barley comes mainly from France, but also from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Denmark. A quarter of our high-quality malt, processed in Belgium, is used by domestic European brewers and the Belgian craft sector. Seventy-five percent of Cargill's malt is exported to Africa and Asia. The malt is transported by truck (bulk) or barges (containers, bags or bulk). The first domestic container terminal in Flanders was built 6 years ago in Herent, an important location through which malt can be shipped to the port of Antwerp via barges
