After the Second World War, he was a lecturer at the Catholic University of Leuven and parliamentary editor of De Nieuwe Standaard. He also became editor-in-chief of the political weekly 't Westen (1945-1947), founded by Jos De Saeger.
After his marriage in 1945, he settled in the Flemish Brabant municipality of Lot, where his wife was a pharmacist. There, in the first post-war municipal elections, he was asked by the local CVP branch to lead the list. The CVP immediately won a majority. During his almost 30 years as mayor, he managed to transform Lot into a "model industrial village".
