At the beginning of September 1944, the German troops had hastily left the municipality for the advancing Allies. In their haste, a lot of German equipment, including ammunition, was left unattended. Especially on the local children, the ammunition exerted a particularly great attraction. The disastrous consequences of this were not long in coming: in addition to the fatal accident in Nederokkerzeel, several ammunition accidents occurred spread over Groot-Kampenhout, in which children became victims.
