The Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from the 12th century and is built in Maasland-Romanesque style. Elements were added until 1786.
In the 13th century, Winksele became an important place of pilgrimage to which the possessed came. In the 15th century, it became the place of pilgrimage against insanity par excellence and remained so until the 19th century.
