This watermill of the princes of Orange-Nassau was built in 1553 and housed a grain and bark mill. The name of the mill refers to the donkeys that pulled the boats via the towpath. The building has the shape of a Latin cross with stepped gables at the four ends. The longitudinal façade perpendicular to the Demer contains the mill wheel. The mill remained in operation until 1946, after which it served as a lock to control the flow of the Demer. The building complex was restored in 1981. (source: Diest, my city)
