This is a street that should actually be called 'Damanstraat'. The workers' family, active in the resistance. In February 1944, the Gestapo raided their home on Pleinstraat. The father was deported to Buchenwald via Breendonk. Daughter Hortense and her mother ended up in Ravensbruck. They all survived the concentration camp. Hortense married British soldier Syd Clews in 1946, whom she had helped escape to England as a resistance fighter during the war. In her new hometown, Newcastle-under-Lyme, the street Clews Walk was named after her. Mark Bles dedicated a book to her resistance life under the title: Child at War, translated into Dutch and published by Standaard uitgeverij.
