The leaf of the sessile oak (Quercus petraea) is elliptical to oval, with regular lobes. The sessile oak should not be confused with the pedunculate oak, which it resembles well. The difference: the leaf of the sessile oak has a petiole, the acorns do not have a petiole. In the case of the pedunculate oak, it is the other way around.
The leaves of the sessile oak are sometimes eaten by the oak processionary moth caterpillar. The burnt hairs of this caterpillar can cause severe irritation in humans and animals.
