The common beech (Fagus sylvatica) grows quite slowly but can become very large. Many roots at the surface and a dense crown of leaves are striking characteristics. Therefore, little often grows under the tree. The leaf is oval to egg-shaped, dark green with a wavy leaf edge.
The beech is also very common in the Sonian Forest and was massively planted there in the late 18th century.
