The blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) belongs to the rose family. Blackthorn often grows in forest edges, but is also often planted in hedges and wooded edges. Cattle don't often nibble on blackthorn because thorns grow on it. This shrub is popular with bees, butterflies and birds such as the blackthorn butterfly.
Slee is an old word for 'plum'. The fruits of blackthorn are often made into jam, fruit purée, fruit juice, or liqueur. However, they are only tasty if you pick them after the first frost (or if you put them in the freezer first).
