The Postelvaartje was dug in November 1922 to transport Postel products to the Kempens canal. It was an initiative of Charles de Broqueville. Later, it also served as an irrigation ditch for the agricultural enterprises in Postel. The calcium-rich water reached the domain of Prince Karel, brother of King Leopold 3. Hence the name Koningsvijver of 2.5 hectares and a fish pond of 1 hectare, now owned by the abbey. Diligent workers from Retie completed the connection with a complex of locks between the Postelvaartje and the abbey grounds in 1945. And this was encouraged by gin and chocolate. The Postelvaartje was ultimately classified as a provincial waterway in 1977. Since then, its cleaning has been regularly managed by the provincial services.
