Between 1930 and 1960, many cross-border workers from the Kortrijk region crossed the border every day to work in the textile industry in northern France. They left at the crack of dawn, first on foot, then by bike and even later by special buses and trains for frontier workers.
In honour of these cross-border and seasonal workers, De Sjouwer was inaugurated in 1974 along the E3 motorway (the current E17) in Aalbeke. The impressive concrete monument was designed by the Brussels architect and sculptor Jacques Moeschal, and was built on top of the artificial hill that was created during the excavation of the E3. The Sjouwer is 35 meters high and has four points that represent the four wind directions. The biggest point points symbolically towards France.
