The Ijseweg runs along the Ijse River to which Overijse owes its name. Overijse is a vast municipality (4,444 hectares) on the southern edge of the Sonian Forest. Overijse is located in the Flemish Region, is part of the province of Flemish Brabant and is a monolingual Flemish municipality without language facilities.
The municipality consists of six clearly separated residential areas: Overijse-centrum with Jezus-Eik, Eizer, Terlanen, Tombeek and Maleizen around it. 'Overijse owes its name to the river that flows through the municipality: the IJse. The oldest name, Isca, can be found in the charter dating from 832. The word Isca is of Celtic origin, was Latinized and means water. Other local watercourses with Celtic names are: the Lane and the IJzernelle, now Nellebeek, name comparable to the Yser in West Flanders, the French Isère and the German Isar, which all means water.'
