Hidden in the nature reserve De Maat once stood the castle Van Eetvelde. Edmond Van Eetvelde was Undersecretary of State for Congo at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1910, he had a castle built here. “As the right hand of King Leopold II, he is responsible for the lives of millions of people,” says Dré. “That is nothing to be proud of.” The castle was destroyed by the Germans during World War II and subsequently demolished. “The history is not beautiful, but the castle itself must have been magnificent,” Dré points out on an old image. “It even had a water tower where rainwater was stored for reuse in the bathroom.”
Today, only the former outbuildings of the castle remain. They have been transformed into youth center De Maat.
