The old Vaulx castle, known as "Château César," is a military construction from the late 13th century located in a strategic position: on a rocky promontory by the banks of the Escaut River. It overlooked the local landscape while benefiting from a water point.
The castle consists of a quadrilateral made of Tournai stone. Each corner of the square hosts a cylindrical tower. One of them was more imposing; it was probably the lordly residence. The towers and curtain walls featured arrow slits that allowed for the defense of this fortress. Outbuildings are visible to the north of the courtyard, at the foot of the southwest tower, etc. The masonry of the towers is of higher quality than that of the curtain walls. At the time, two parallel facing walls were built, and the empty space was filled with a mass of pebbles and mortar, forming the "blocking."
Abandoned for years, the castle served as a stone quarry. Today, a large part of the east and west curtain walls, as well as a few meters of elevation of the southeast and southwest towers, has been preserved, and an association regularly organizes activities around this imposing vestige.
Classified as a monument on June 21, 1943.
