Celtic Burial Mounds

Description

These are located on the Dorperheide along the Kaulille-Hamont road. All burial mounds of Kaulille must be dated at the earliest to the Late Bronze Age (approximately 900 BC). The diameter of the mounds varies between 8 and 14m. The preserved height is relatively low, averaging 50-60cm. A circle of posts was found around four mounds, one burial mound was surrounded by a ditch, and seven mounds had no surrounding structure. In 1983, after several reported looting incidents, a B.T.K. project was established, titled 'Archaeological emergency research of a prehistoric burial site'. The municipality of Bocholt acted as the promoter and worked intensively on the research. The urn field was excavated by Ms. Annemie Engels, under the direction of Prof. Luc Van Impe. The excavation was completed on October 31, 1984. A total of 44 graves or their remains were discovered, with 37 urns or fragments. Additionally, a number of items from the Late Stone Age were found, such as arrowheads, blades, and a hand axe, as well as some offerings in bronze, iron, and beads made of bone.
