Het Steen is a protected monument in Flemish Renaissance style. Pieter Paul Rubens bought the castle in 1635; it had become very neglected during the Spanish occupation years. He lived in the castle with his young wife Helena Fourment who bore him 5 children. At the castle in Elewijt, renowned meetings of artists were held, including Jordaens, Van Dijck, Teniers. The first title on Rubens' grave in the Sint-Jacobskerk in Antwerp is "Baron van Steen".
