The start of the war disrupted the peace and calm of Oekene. On 'Fleeing Monday' known as 'Vliegende Maandag', thousands of refugees passed through the village on the run from the rumours of advancing Germans. After that, Oekene was visited by British and French soldiers before eventually being occupied by the Germans.
Fleeing Monday (Vliegende Maandag)
Until Monday, 24 August, the war was only something to be read about in the newspapers for the people of Oekene. Over the course of the day, however, thousands of refugees from central Belgium suddenly arrived. In the end, it was nearly another two months before the Germans really occupied Oekene.
Visitors from abroad
The first months of the war brought an unprecedented flood of troops of foreign origin.
