The Zandberg is next to the Houterenberg one of the Diestiaan hills in this region. These witness mounds were created several million years ago. At that time, the whole of Flanders was below sea level. Along the coastline, between Hasselt and Tienen, sandbanks were deposited.
These sand mountains are silent witnesses of the prehistoric Diestiaan Sea. The iron sandstone of these sand mountains was widely used in old churches and monuments.
