The neighborhood De Ruiter owes its name to the inn of the same name. As the name suggests, the horse and its rider are the logical symbols of this neighborhood. In 2013, in honor of 40 years of community work, the statue "Horse and Rider" by Isidoor Goddeeris was unveiled. They gaze towards the center of Roeselare.
The poem "Rider on Horseback" was written by Jef Soenens. Jef Soenens (born 1945), until recently active as a teacher in special education, lived for many years in the neighborhood De Ruiter and still feels closely connected to it. This was reflected in numerous historical works about De Ruiter. For example, he wrote about the school, the neighborhood chapel, and several rural chapels.
