The Merkemveld domain derives its name from the family of Outryve de Merckem, who had this former heathland reforested around the end of the 18th century. In the middle of the forest, the Baesveld castle was built. The beautiful castle park was partially subdivided for weekend residences after World War II. Since 1948, there has also been a youth accommodation center established by Scouts and Guides Flanders, and recently a play area has been added. The Doeveren area borders Merkemveld and mainly consists of forests alongside meadows and fields.
