At the cemetery of Ruisbroek they lie together in a fenced bed. Perhaps they were even sitting next to each other when it happened: the train collision of February 18, 1899 in Forest. This binds them forever. "Den Denderboode" speaks of 24 dead, 80 wounded. The victims were mainly schoolchildren and commuting workers on their way to Brussels. Some of the children were barely 10 years old! The devastation was terrible.
Marie Stallaert sat with her leg crushed under the locomotive. When she was unable to free her, she begged her: "Cut off my leg, so that I may at least see my mother!" They did what they asked, but in vain. She died, 21 years old, without having said goodbye. (Het Laatste Nieuws, 20/2/1899)
