The two Ekerse pits are excavations that arose because soil was needed in 1925 to raise part of the Ekerse polder. The pits are quite deep. The large pond has a maximum depth of 21m, the small pond is about 12m deep. Both pits have almost perpendicular clay walls, in which at certain depths (5 to 10m) there are still recognizable fossil shell layers. This makes them particularly attractive for divers and even one of the most popular dive sites in Flanders.
