Het Schijn is not the only water element in the landscape. There are also numerous pools and ponds, but even further south there is also a remnant of the Herentalse Vaart. This is a canal that was dug in 1490 as a branch of the Groot Schijn. The Herentalse Vaart flowed from Wommelgem to the former city centre of Antwerp. The construction was necessary to get enough fresh water in the old city. In 1930, most of the canal was vaulted and a section closed. Today, the canal is completely disconnected from appearances. The piece in the Rivierenhof is the last remnant and protected because of its historical value. The Herentalse Vaart is located against the slope of the E34/E313 motorway, which shields the Rivierenhof on the southern side.
