Description

The Northern Heideland forms the gateway from Antwerp to a vast heathland. The border park 'Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide' is an international nature reserve with an area of 37 km². The centre of gravity is the Kalmthoutse Heide. The area has already taken its current form at the end of the last ice age. Then the westerly winds carried large amounts of sand, forming land dunes. In the Northern Heideland the landscape is quite dry, but in the Kalmthoutse Heide there are also fens. These are places where the sand has been removed or where peat or sand extraction used to be done.
