The Casemates are part of the city fortifications. They are bomb-proof vaulted spaces that were used by soldiers to store ammunition, preserve food, or as shelters for soldiers and artillery. During World War II, residents sought protection there during bombings. The Casemates were part of the bastion of the Lys. Originally, there were 30 Casemates, but now only 11 remain. They date back to the Dutch period when Menen was a barrier city on the southern border of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. They were built over a lower row of Casemates that were possibly designed by the French fortification builder Vauban at the end of the 17th century.
