The common dotter flower is a perennial plant from the ranunculus family. The flower took its name from the German 'Dotter' and the etymologically related Middle Dutch 'doder' (dodre) meaning 'yolk', referring to its yellow colour.
The preferred location is along edges of ditches, streams, in damp meadows, spring areas and other soggy places. In those places, the plant occurs both in full sun and in partial shade. The flowering period runs from March to April and sometimes from August to September.
