Between the trees you can see several narrow canals or ditches. The higher strips are called rebates. The soil, from the ditches, has been used to raise the rabat. This method is used in forestry to obtain dry strips on which the trees are then planted. The ditches provide dewatering. It is not known exactly when forestry on rebates was first applied, but in 1799 the method was already mentioned. Rebates were planted on very wet, swampy soils but also on somewhat drier soil. Many production forests that were once built on rebates are now being managed more naturally, which means that the rebates are also slowly disappearing.
