Here on the path, there is a transition between the forest and the fields. Ideally, a strip of wild herbs grows along the edge of a field or meadow. Between these wild herbs and the 'real' high forest with mature trees, shrubs grow, such as elder, hazel,...and tree seedlings.
Forest edges are ideal for birds. They find a wide variety of berries there. In the flower-rich thicket, they find seeds, caterpillars, etc. Butterflies and other insects are attracted to the many flowers of, for example, blackberries and cuckoo flowers at the forest edge. In the middle of the forest, it is often too shadowy for these plants and insects.
