The chapel of the Resistance was erected in 1947 in memory of 130 members of the Resistance from the Maaseik region. During the last months of the war of WWII, a group of resistance members had gathered in the woods to help hasten the retreat of the Germans. Promised weapons did not materialize and food supplies did not go very smoothly. After a week, still no weapons had been dropped. A large column of Germans approaching on both banks of the canal caused panic to break out. Many fled. Some, unfortunately, ran straight into the arms of the enemy.
